The medallion recognizes achievement in the various arenas of sports ranging from Sports Management to the Disabled Athlete, with many levels of recognition in between. Recipients are selected according to the process outlined below for each award. The final ballot is prepared by the Cabinet and is presented to the Board of Trustees for ratification. The ballot is prepared in December for dissemination. Listed below is the designation of each award with its name, criteria and link to past recipients.


Eagle Award

The Eagle Award, the United States Sports Academy's highest international honor, is presented to a world leader in sports in recognition of that individual's contributions in promoting international harmony, peace and goodwill through the effective use of sports. The recipient of this award must have tempered strength with keen judgment in using authority wisely as a means of bringing nations together through sports for the betterment of mankind.


Amos Alonzo Stagg Coaching Award

The Amos Alonzo Stagg Coaching Award is presented to an individual who has experienced outstanding achievement as a coach. This person should exhibit a high standard of propriety, imagination and innovation as a character-builder in the tradition of great teacher-coaches.


C. Vivian Stringer Coaching Award

The C. Vivian Stringer Coaching Award is presented to a woman who has experienced outstanding achievement as a coach. This person should exhibit a high standard of propriety, imagination and innovation as a character-builder in the tradition of great teacher-coaches.


Carl Maddox Sports Management Award

The Carl Maddox Sports Management Award, named in honor of the former Athletic Director of Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University, Corbet Award Winner and United States Sports Academy Board of Trustees member, is given annually to an individual for contributions to the growth and development of sports enterprise through effective management practices. The individual should exhibit mastery of all the management functions, be well known in the sport arena and have an abiding belief in the need for ethical behavior in sports management.


Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award

The Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award, named in honor of the former Olympic athlete, international sports medicine scholar and Director of the University of Kentucky Rehabilitation Center, is given annually to an individual for contributions to the growth and development of sport medicine through practice and/or scholarly activity. The individual should exhibit a mastery of some aspect of sports medicine through practice or research, be well known in the sports medicine field and have an abiding belief in and practice of ethical behavior in pursuit of knowledge.


Dwight David Eisenhower Fitness Award

The Dwight David Eisenhower Fitness Award is presented to a person who has shown outstanding individual or cumulative achievement in fitness and has contributed to the growth and development of sports fitness through outstanding leadership activity.


Juan Antonio Samaranch IOC Disabled Athlete Award

The Juan Antonio Samaranch IOC Disabled Athlete Award is presented annually to the physically or mentally challenged athlete who displays courage, desire and athletic ability in the face of adversity to achieve the goals set forth in the athlete's particular arena of competition.


Jackie Robinson Humanitarian Award

The Jackie Robinson Humanitarian Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a concern for mankind. This individual should exhibit the qualities of dedication, grace under pressure, personal sacrifice, compassion, hope and dignity that characterize the promotion of human welfare and social reform.


Jim Thorpe All-Around Award

The Jim Thorpe All-Around Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in multiple sports and/or multiple events of the same sport. This individual should exhibit the qualities of versatility, strength, speed, flexibility, conditioning and training that exemplify superior athletic prowess.


Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award

The Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias Courage Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates courageous action in overcoming adversity to excel in sports. This individual should exhibit the qualities of courage, perseverance, grace and strength in sports achievement.


Ronald Reagan Media Award

The Ronald Reagan Media Award, named in honor of the 40th President of the United States, is presented to an individual for outstanding contributions to sports through broadcasting, print, photography or acting. The individual should exhibit imagination, excitement and genius in kindling a keen public interest and appreciation for the role of sports in modern society.


Theodore Roosevelt Meritorious Achievement Award

The Theodore Roosevelt Meritorious Achievement Award is presented to an athlete in any amateur or professional sport, past or present, who has excelled not only on the playing field, but also as a contributor to both sports and society for at least a quarter of a century.
