Liston Bochette IIIListon Bochette III is the perfect example of combining the artist and the athlete, the true goal of the American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA). A three-time Olympian for the Puerto Rican bobsled team, Bochette has painted since the early 1980's. For his accomplishments, both on the athletic field and in the arts, Bochette earned ASAMA's 1996 Sport Artist of the Year Award. Bochette began as an illustrator for Lee Living & Gulf Coast Magazine in Florida. His work has appeared in various art exhibits from his home country of Puerto Rico to Barcelona, Spain, to Caracas, Venezuela. In 1992, he earned a Gold Medal from the Barcelona Olympic Cultural Festival. Bochette the athlete has had a very successful career as well. He began his career as an accomplished track and field athlete, representing his homeland in the 1983 World University Games, the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1992, 1994 and 1998 Winter Olympics. During 1988, he set the national decathlon record for Puerto Rico with 7,815 points. He has also been on the Puerto Rican National teams of rowing and bobsleigh. To fully complete his career, Bochette has used disciplines he gained as a skilled artist and athlete to make himself an accomplished administrator. The founder of the Olympic Development Fund, he also founded the Puerto Rican foundations of modern pentathlon, bobsleigh, canoe/kayak and badminton. For obvious reasons, Bochette is seen as the developer of Puerto Rican sport on a national scale. Today, Bochette continues to contribute to sport and the arts by serving on the executive board of the Tampa/Orlando 2012 Olympic Bid Committee and is the current chairman of ASAMA. He has also attended several International Olympic Committee sessions as guest speaker and currently serves on the United States Sports Academy Board of Trustees. |
