Award recipients have traditionally been presented with the Academy's Order of the Eagle Exemplar medal in recognition of their various achievements. This special medallion was designed by the Academy's Sport Artist of the Year 1990, Blair Buswell. Award recipients are also presented with the Academy Rosette, modeled after the Legion of Honour, which was instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion first used it in the United States in 1877. Since World War II, rosettes have been made to represent various types of awards, both civilian and military. A rosette is a symbol of recognition and affiliation, and is an attractive and elegant presentation that is usually worn on lapels by both men and women. They are handcrafted, using fine quality fabric pleated to resemble the petals of a rose.
