The University of North Carolina Women’s Soccer Team has been named the Women’s Team of the Year by the United States Sports Academy.

"In light of the company we are keeping with this award we are truly Honored," UNC Women's Soccer Coach Anson Dorrance said. "On behalf of the entire UNC Women's Soccer roster and staff we would like to thank the United States Sports Academy for this wonderful recognition."

For 18th time in 25 years of women's soccer, the Tar Heels won the NCAA Women's Soccer National Championship. The Tar Heels defeated the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame by a score of 2-1 at the 2006 College Cup in Cary, N.C. And there is no end in sight, as the Tar Heels started six freshmen in the national title game.

In 2006, the Tar Heels reeled off 27 straight wins after losing the first game of the season, and won their first national title since 2003. Their lone loss was a 1-0 setback to then-No. 9 ranked Texas A&M when UNC was missing three starters who were playing for various national teams.

Following the season, UNC Women’s Soccer Head Coach Anson Dorrance received the NSCAA Southeast Region coach of the year award. Dorrance has led the North Carolina women's soccer program since its inception in 1979 building an unstoppable and veritable winning machine.

Since 1984, the Academy has recognized outstanding achievements in sports through the Academy’s Awards of Sport, which pays “Tribute to the Artist and Athlete.” Past recipients include the 2004 U.S. Olympic Softball Team; the University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team and the 2000 Norwegian Soccer Team.
